Noumena

While I'm on a Finnish death metal high, I thought I'd rave a little about one of the first bands that got me hooked onto the melodeath metal genre. They're Finnish as well. ( No seriously, someone from Finland, please do befriend me!!!!)

When you listen to a song by Noumena, there is a definite sense of energy you feel. Although the band has been known to make their songs and music mostly about gloom and dark times, they have done it in the most creative way possible and are very versatile! They've got a similar sound going on to Amorphis because of the folky feel included in their songs. Their music also features a good balance between death growls and clean male and female vocals which I really love!

Noumena is one of the classier bands when it comes to the Gothenburg metal scene and they've set the bar pretty high for upcoming acts. The downside however is that after a point, they're music tends to get slightly repetitive. When I listened to their third album, I was a tad disappointed with the lack of originality  througout. Their songs start strongly but as it progresses you get a  "whathell is going on" sort of feeling.

Strongest of the three albums released so far would definitely be their second one, Absence released in 2002. It's packed with some kinky melodies, grooves and growls. It's heavy, got a nice dark feel to it but not    in-your-face brutal. There are some really deadly riffs that define the album, and guitars sound awesome! Drums are kept at a slow range giving the tracks a nice pace. What's best is that no two songs sound a like which can't be said about their most recent album. You tend to be reminded of Insomnium when listening to this band. The softer bits throughout the album add in some deep emotion to the music which makes it even more intriguing.

Really excited about their fourth album, Death Walks With Me. Hopefully it brings back the authenticity of their first two albums!


Noumena are back with a new album this year, their fourth in total, which will be titled Death Walks With Me. The album hits stores in April and you can already check out a teaser below as well as some album details. 

Message from the band: "Dear Noumena fans, eventually we have things in order and we can tear the veil of silence: our next album will be released in April. After a couple of years in hibernation, we are ready to show how to combine the best ingredients of the genre with a peculiar recipe.

Our new songs are heavier and gloomier than Noumena's previous albums, both musically and thematically. We have broken our old patterns and barriers. But, there are Noumena trademarks ranging from catchy and melancholic melodies to aggressive and tranquil moments, of course. Great metal needs lots of forging, and we took our time. One reason for such a long pause in releasing was difficulty to find a proper label for us.

The new album also introduces the new member of Noumena: Suvi Uura. She is a talented and many-sided musician, who brings a final touch to Noumena's sound and live action. Suvi's vocal delivery is wide and deep, from touching and tender singing to brutal growling.

Death Walks With Me will be released by Haunted Zoo Productions and distributed by Playground Music. Release date (CD and digital) is 18.4.2013 for Nordic and Baltic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), rest of the world is TBA at the moment."
